Manfred Zipfel Finds Hope In Simplicity With Heartfelt New Single “Sunshine”
Following the thoughtful environmental message of ‘Colours of the Earth’, South African multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Manfred Zipfel returns with “Sunshine” – an uplifting new single inspired by a treasured family poem and created to bring hope during life’s most challenging moments.
Released as part of his ongoing ‘Absolute Autonomy ‘series, ‘Sunshine’ reflects Zipfel’s unwavering commitment to authentic, handcrafted music while reminding listeners that even the darkest days can be brightened by simple acts of encouragement.
The song was born from a deeply personal experience. During a difficult period in his life, Zipfel’s mother gave him a framed copy of a poem by German writer and poet Cäsar Flaischlen – a poem that had been his grandmother’s favourite. Today, it still hangs in his studio, serving as a daily reminder of resilience, hope and perspective.
“The poem brightened up my day and inspired me to write an uplifting song which hopefully can put a smile on someone’s face when the world becomes overwhelming and challenging,” says Zipfel.
Initially written for a single acoustic guitar and vocal, the song worked beautifully in a live setting but, once recorded, lacked the emotional engagement he was looking for. “I realised that a studio recording is different from performing live. The audience can’t interact with the performer in the same way, so I needed to create that connection through the arrangement itself.”
The solution came through carefully expanding the instrumentation while preserving the song’s organic spirit. The original six-string acoustic guitar was replaced with a twelve-string, joined by drums, bass guitar, electric guitar, DOBRO slide guitar and piano accordion. Every instrument was recorded live using microphones, intentionally capturing the natural ambience of the room rather than relying on artificial production techniques.
The result is Sunshine—a warm, uplifting track that faithfully translates the comforting message of Flaischlen’s poem into an immersive musical experience. The release also continues Zipfel’s broader Absolute Autonomy philosophy—a creative approach that rejects formulaic, trend-driven production in favour of authenticity, craftsmanship and independent artistic expression.Working from his self-built studio in Gauteng, Zipfel writes, records and produces nearly every aspect of his music himself, allowing each instrument to play an equal role in telling the story.
