Thato Guerrero Returns with ‘BACK’ — A Fierce, Self-Forged Anthem from the Heart of Tembisa

Koketso Thato Mothapo, professionally known as Thato Guerrero, releases his explosive debut single “BACK” — a raw, self-defining statement from an artist forged in the streets of Tembisa.
Guerrero’s sound is unmistakably militant, township-orientated, and laced with a duality that mirrors his upbringing: the harshness of ghetto life balanced with the ambition, opulence, and self-belief he refuses to let go of. “A flaw in the perfect position is a strength,” he says — a mantra that shapes his sonic identity.
Though inspired partly by Latin culture, the name Guerrero goes deeper: meaning “soldier” or “warrior”. It represents the fire behind his creative force. “Guerrero is more like a description of my sound than a name,” he explains. “It’s the fire that burns inside me.”

His new single “BACK” was released on June 20th 2025 and marks his first official drop on digital streaming platforms. Written as a dedication to himself, the song captures the moment Guerrero decided to stop waiting for discovery and start building his own legacy. “I felt like I was sleeping on myself,” he says. “So I vowed to put in the work. I’ve never been gone — but I’m BACK.”
The track’s visualizer was filmed in a hostel neighbouring his grandmother’s home — a place often viewed as rough or dark, yet, for those who grew up there, simply home. “People see harshness, but the kids born there are at peace. They smile. They live. I wanted to show that,” he says. The video reflects both the misunderstood environment and the resilience of its people.
Recorded, mixed, and mastered on 18 May 2025 in Emfihlweni, Tembisa, “BACK” reinforces Guerrero’s mission: to tell the stories of his township and ignite hope in the young people who grow up in harsh environments. Since first recording “for fun” in 2017, he has leaned into a creative instinct that flows effortlessly and subconsciously.
